The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who need a U.S. tax identification number but don’t have, and aren’t eligible for, a Social Security number. We renew it If your ITIN hasn’t been used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years, it expires and must be renewed before you file your next return.
